What bookkeeping, payroll and tax services cost

Most firms in this business won’t tell you anything until you’re on a call. Here’s what we can tell you up front: how we price, what moves the number, and what you’ll be asked before we quote.

How we price

Fixed monthly, not hourly

You know what it costs before the month starts. No clock running while you ask a question.

Quoted after a call, not before

We look at the actual state of things first. A quote given without that is a guess you’ll pay for later.

Cleanup priced separately

One-off work to get current is quoted apart from the ongoing fee, so you can see what’s a fix and what’s a commitment.

What changes the price

Two businesses of the same size can be very different jobs. These are what we’re actually looking at.

For bookkeeping

  • Transaction volume
  • Number of bank, card and merchant accounts
  • Cash or accrual
  • How far behind the records are
  • How many entities

For payroll

  • Headcount
  • How often you run payroll
  • How many cities your staff work in
  • Tipped staff, certified payroll or prevailing wage
  • Contractors alongside employees

For tax

  • Entity type
  • How many schedules are involved
  • Fixed assets and depreciation
  • Multiple states or foreign reporting
  • Whether the books behind it are current

For accounting

  • Number of entities and whether they consolidate
  • Cash or accrual
  • How much cleanup the chart of accounts needs
  • What reporting you need and for whom

Catch-up and cleanup

If the books are behind, that’s a one-off project quoted separately from the monthly fee, with a fixed scope and price agreed before we start, so it doesn’t become an open-ended bill.

  • Fixed scope, fixed quote
  • Separate from the monthly fee
  • Any number of years

What isn’t included

Being clear about this up front saves an awkward conversation later.

  • Ad spend on marketing campaigns — that goes on your own account, at cost, never marked up.
  • Third-party software licences where you need your own.
  • Audit and assurance work — that requires an independent firm.
  • Legal advice, contracts or entity disputes.
  • Registered agent and state filing fees paid on your behalf.

How you get a number

  1. A short call

A quick conversation about what you have now, what’s behind, and what you need. No pitch.

  2. We look at the actual state

Read-only access or a few recent statements. We’d rather see it than be told about it.

  3. A quote in writing

What it costs monthly, what any cleanup costs once, and what’s included in each. Then you decide.

No obligation, and we’ll tell you if you don’t need us yet.

Questions about pricing

The things that come up most on a first call.

Bookkeeping starts at $350 a month on the Basic plan, and the final number depends on the factors above. Because the honest answer is that it depends, and a fixed list would mean either overcharging simple jobs or underquoting complicated ones and coming back later. The starting points above are real, and the factors that move them are listed so you can work out roughly where you’d sit.

Book a free call. We’ll learn about your business, answer your questions and send a fixed quote with the terms in writing. No work starts until you approve it.

Business returns start at $850. Individual returns depend on the forms and schedules involved, so we confirm the price after a short call.

We’d talk to you before changing anything. Prices move when the work genuinely changes — you take on staff, add an entity, double your transaction volume — not quietly at renewal.

No. The fee covers the work and the conversations around it. A firm that bills for a phone call trains you not to ask, which is how problems get expensive.

Yes, and it’s usually cheaper than buying them separately, because the work overlaps — the books feed the close, the close feeds the return. We’ll show you both numbers so you can see the difference.

That’s fine. Catch-up work, a single year’s return, or a cleanup project can all be one-off. There’s no requirement to move to a monthly arrangement afterwards.
